Do I need to have a partner?

The answer is no! At Cortez Ballroom, we offer high-quality and affordable dance instruction for individuals without a partner.

In private lessons, if you don't have a partner, don't worry! You will dance with your instructor, who will guide you every step of the way. Our highly qualified instructors will help you develop your skills and confidence, whether you are a beginner or an experienced dancer.

In group classes, we teach not only the basic steps, techniques, and patterns but also how to dance with different partners. You will get to meet new people, and rotating partners throughout the class will help you become a more versatile dancer. Dancing with different partners will also help you develop your leading or following skills, making you a better partner overall.

Our classes are designed to be fun and challenging, regardless of your dance experience or background. So don't hesitate to join our dance community today, and discover the joy of dancing without a partner!

Which is better, private lessons or group classes?

Choosing between private lessons and group classes can be a tough decision. At Cortez Ballroom, we believe that a combination of both is ideal for most dancers. Group classes offer the opportunity to learn step patterns, dance vocabulary, and basic techniques. They also provide a fun and social environment where you can practice leading and following skills by working with different partners. Private lessons, on the other hand, offer the most personalized instruction and allow you to progress at your own pace. Our experienced instructors will tailor the lesson to your individual needs, providing immediate feedback, and focusing on areas where you need improvement.

At Cortez Ballroom, we understand that everyone has different learning styles, budgets, and goals. That's why we offer the flexibility to customize your dance education. You can choose a mix of group classes and private lessons that works best for you. You also have the option of organizing a private group lesson, either as a one-time event or an ongoing class. We teach private group lessons for schools, businesses, wedding groups, Quinceañera groups, and any other special occasion.

Private group lessons are an excellent way to bond with friends, family, or colleagues while learning a new skill. Our instructors will work with you to design a lesson plan that meets your group's needs and interests. Whether you're looking for a fun team-building activity, a unique party idea, or a way to prepare for a special event, we've got you covered.

At Cortez Ballroom, we are committed to providing high-quality and affordable dance instruction to our community. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy of dance, regardless of their background or skill level. Contact us today to schedule your private lesson or sign up for our group classes, and let us help you achieve your dance goals!

What should I wear or do I need special shoes?

We want you to feel comfortable and confident while dancing, so it's important to choose the right attire and footwear. To begin with, wear clothes that allow for easy movement and make you feel comfortable. However, it's recommended that you wear leather-soled shoes that cover your entire foot for optimal support and traction on the dance floor. Rubber-soled shoes may hinder your movements and stick to the floor, making it difficult to execute certain dance steps. Sandals or sling-backs are also not recommended as they don't offer the necessary support and stability for dancing.

As you progress, you may want to consider investing in dance shoes. These specialized shoes are designed specifically for dancing and offer several benefits, including better balance, flexibility, and comfort. Dance shoes feature suede soles that allow for easy gliding and pivoting on the dance floor, and heels that help you maintain balance while executing turns and spins. Dance shoes also come in various designs that keep your feet securely in place while dancing, preventing slips and falls.

At Cortez Ballroom, we understand the importance of selecting the right dance shoes, and our experienced staff is here to assist you in choosing the perfect pair. We offer a wide range of dance shoes for men and women, in different sizes, styles, and colors. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned dancer, we've got you covered. So, when you're ready to take the next step and order your dance shoes, we'll be more than happy to guide you through the process.

Remember, the right shoes can make all the difference when it comes to dancing. So, don't settle for less and invest in a pair of dance shoes today!

What kind of dances should I learn? How many should I start out with?

If you're wondering what kind of dances to learn, your musical preferences can be a good place to start. For instance, if you're into big band swing, you might enjoy East Coast Swing and Foxtrot. On the other hand, if you prefer blues or contemporary R&B, West Coast Swing could be your style. Latin music enthusiasts have an exciting array of options to choose from, including Rumba, Cha-Cha, Salsa, Bachata, Bolero, and many more. While some dances, like Argentine Tango, may not be as familiar to you, keeping an open mind can lead to discovering a new favorite.

The number of dances you should start learning at once is highly individualized. Some people like to sample multiple dance styles to find their favorites, while others prefer to start with one or two dances and gradually add more as they become more proficient. At Cortez Ballroom, we understand that every dancer is unique, which is why we can help you design a personalized dance program tailored to your interests and goals.

Our registration form asks specific questions about what you want to achieve through dancing, which helps us get a better idea of your needs and preferences. Our highly qualified instructors will then work with you to create a dance program that is challenging, rewarding, and enjoyable. At Cortez Ballroom, we are committed to providing our students with the highest quality dance instruction, excellent customer service, and a fun and supportive community.

How long will it take me to learn to dance?

We understand that many of our students are eager to hit the dance floor right away, and we encourage this. After your very first lesson, you will have the skills you need to start dancing at parties, weddings, and other social events.

Of course, becoming a skilled dancer takes time and practice. Depending on your goals and the amount of time you are willing to commit to learning, it usually takes a few months to feel truly comfortable and confident on the dance floor. Our experienced instructors will work with you to develop a personalized dance program that meets your needs and helps you achieve your goals.

To accelerate your progress and help you stay motivated, we occasionally host dance events, such as "night out on the town", where you can practice your moves in a fun and supportive environment. We also recommend other local dance events and classes hosted by other studios and instructors throughout San Diego, CA, and surrounding areas.

Whether you're looking to learn a specific dance style, improve your skills, or just have fun, Cortez Ballroom is here to support you every step of the way. Join us and start your dance journey today!

When can I move up from one level to another?

At our dance studio, we understand that the desire to improve and progress as a dancer is a natural one. However, we also know that building a strong foundation is crucial to achieving your dance goals. That's why we have set up a clear and structured system to help our students progress from one level to the next.

Before moving on to a new level, it is important to have a solid understanding and mastery of the material covered at your current level. Our experienced instructors will evaluate your progress and let you know when you are ready to move up. This evaluation process ensures that you are challenged enough to continue improving while also avoiding frustration and burnout.

We provide regular updates on your progress to keep you informed of your strengths and areas for improvement. This feedback will help you stay motivated and focused as you work towards achieving your goals.

At our studio, we are committed to helping you develop and reach your full potential as a dancer. Join our community today and discover the joy and fulfillment that comes with achieving your dance goals.

I have other dance training, what level should I start with?

Having prior dance training can be a great advantage when it comes to learning ballroom dancing. It can provide you with excellent body awareness and experience in learning new steps quickly. However, it's important to keep in mind that ballroom dancing is quite different from other genres of dancing. It requires you to learn how to properly connect with a partner, which is ultimately more important than just memorizing steps.

Furthermore, the techniques used in ballroom dancing can vary greatly from those used in other dance styles. For instance, the hip movements in Latin dances require a different set of body mechanics than those in jazz dancing. That's why, even if you are highly trained in other disciplines, it's recommended that you start with a Beginner level class when learning ballroom dancing.

Starting with a Beginner level class will help you establish a solid foundation in partnership dancing. It will also give you the opportunity to learn the basics and focus on connecting with your partner before moving on to more complex steps. While you may progress more quickly than students with no prior dance training, it's crucial to ensure that you have a good understanding of the fundamental principles of ballroom dancing.

At Cortez Ballroom, we offer a range of classes for dancers of all levels, from absolute beginners to advanced professionals. Our highly qualified instructors will provide you with the guidance and support you need to master the art of ballroom dancing. Join our dance community today and discover the joy of movement, creativity, and connection!

What is the age range of your students?

Students around the world and at our school range from the young to the young at heart — from ages 9 to 90+. Again, if you can move, you can learn to dance.

Where can I find a partner?

Are you in search of a dance partner? We understand that finding a compatible partner is crucial to your growth as a dancer. Fortunately, there are several ways to find a partner in the dance community.

Firstly, you can take dance lessons without a partner. Our expert instructors at Cortez Ballroom will teach you the fundamental steps and techniques of various dance forms. Through the lessons, you can build your confidence and improve your skills.

Secondly, attending socials and dance practices is an excellent way to meet people who share your passion for dancing. You will get to interact with dancers of different levels and styles, making it easier for you to find a partner who complements your skills and personality.

Thirdly, we recommend letting us and your fellow students know that you are searching for a partner.
